Data Sources and Explanations:


The Following Variables Come From International Futures

  • Population: Forecast using WDI data for the year 2009

  • GDP PPP at Per Capita: The Gross Domestic Product of the country, equaled across countries through purchasing power parity, then divided by the population in order to determine its level per person. This was forecast for the year 2009.

  • Democracy Scale 0-20, Higher More Democratic: This data comes originally from the Policy project, but was forecasted by IFs out to the year 2009.

  • Human Development Index: An index developed through the Human Development Report that focuses on country level literacy, life expectancy, educational attainmnet and logged GDP. This variable was also forecasted out to 2009 by IFs.

  • Percent of Global Power: This index takes into consideration military capacity, military spending, levels of economic growth, levels of governance stability and demographic trends. It then computes the relative power of each country. This is also a forecasted variable for 2009.

The Following Variable Comes From the Fund for Peace

  • State Failure: This index is compiled annually. The data used here are from 2008 and represent an analysis of 12 different indicators highlighted on the Fund for Peace's website
